The giant squid are still going strong in south county with the Newport and Dana Point sport boats reporting wide open action. The other bright spot is the Calico and Sand bass fishing. This is going strong at the local structure spots with the live squid on the dropper loop. This is near limit or limit style fishing for the big grumps averaging 2 to 5 pounds, you can't beat that for winter time. The weather is absolutely perfect, warm temps and light winds with a fairly large swell of 5 feet or so. If this weather holds much longer, watch the water temps soar into the sixties and this should jump start the spring spawn.
